He says they are guilty because they are doing the same things themselves. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Romans 2:1-3:20 Sermon Notes; JOSEPH SUTCLIFFE. 4. 1. (1) The shame of exposure. They have a clear understanding of a standard. In the day when God shall Judge the secrets of men. Perhaps there are many Christians here who have realized that when we protect and allow areas of our life to be given over to this kind of judgmental condemning and criticizing of other people, we are blocking the flow of the life of God to our lives, keeping back the joy and peace that he would have us enjoy. Yes, we are all guilty of the same things we accuse others of doing. (2) Can judge them; none other has power to assemble the living and the dead; wisdom, to know all the individuals and their actions, words, thoughts, etc. The God of truth and justice sees the one as well as the other. 2. The Lord keeps the scaffold standing till He hath built up the fabric. If He be driven to say, "Depart, ye cursed," He will see it done, and into the everlasting punishment they must go. Romans 2:14 I. Many a man indulges passing thoughts, who would not put them into deeds even if tempted by the certainty of perpetual concealment. 7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. I expect him to forget them without revealing to me what their true nature is. Self is a subtle principle. (see Matthew 19:19; Romans 12:10; Philippians 2:4). How many actions now under the garb of humility will then be seen to have originated in pride! 2. Paul develops the second step of his argument in Verses 2-4. Besides, the festering iniquities of each age cry out to God that He should deal with them. 2. Other people lie and cheat; we simply stretch the truth a little. I. To teach righteousness. There is no other way. How can he allow a tyrant like Hitler or Stalin to arise and murder millions of innocent people? Church member or pagan, civilized or savage, white, brown, red, black or yellow, it makes no difference before God. God has hidden a part of our lives; and this concealment we can cast over much more than He has hidden. In his book, Mere Christianity, he says. Rejecting the true God, men turned to false gods and widespread destruction of the home occurred because of sexual immorality and perversion. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, and then the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. If we rebel, God will not hold us guiltless. Keep back nothing. II. How few that God will judge them! In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. It is idle and profane to guess at it, since even the Son of Man, as such, knoweth not the time. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath. 5. Or, again, he might tell quite a different story. 1. CHARACTER. (3) Besides, the secret things of men enter into the very essence of their actions. Paul wants to have a word with this “moral person” before he moves on to speak to the Jew… As a practiced, self-righteous hypocrite, I always have a feeling of surprise at that statement. All that is recorded in the first chapter of Romans took place last night in San Francisco and Los Angeles, up and down the West coast, and throughout this nation, and the world in which we live. (3) With respect to His followers also, it is fit that He should acquit them, who bore their sins; that He should determine their happiness, who purchased heaven for them with its various mansions; that He should present them faultless, who preserved them from falling; that He should judge those who were under His government while on earth. Let us avoid a secret sin with a hundred times more eager avoidance, just because it is secret. 6God "will give to each person according to what he has done." Yet the Scriptures tell us that God is constantly bringing to our attention times when we see ourselves clearly. Is not this word "my gospel" the voice of love? We are congenitally blind toward many of our own faults. (3) Blasphemy (ver. Perhaps there are some here this morning who have seen themselves in a new light. The question we ought to ask is, "Why didn't he judge me yesterday, when I said that sharp, caustic word that plunged like an arrow into a loved one's heart and hurt him badly? This, then, is one part of man's primal constitution as a moral and religious being; he is moved to love and serve God, and to work righteousness, by an original instinct of his nature. How many actions, which seem under the motive of zeal to God, like those of Jehu, are prompted by interest! 2. Why do you judge others so critically and so constantly, yet never seem to judge yourself? 3. This will be —. Even as a Christian, I expect him to overlook areas of my life without any acknowledgment on my part that they are there. Thus not only he who follows after strong drink in excess, but he also who fain would do so if he could is a drunkard in the sight of the Almighty. (a) There will be a session of majesty, and the appearing of a great white throne, surrounded with pomp of angels and glorified beings. Let us more stedfastly believe that we shall dwell in heaven, and we shall think more frequently of dwelling there. Hence heroism, generosity, etc., in ancient and modern world. But when we mistreat others, we say to them. What he remembered of his own early character; what were his real affections; what did he secretly like, and pursue, and hope for; what changes had passed over him; what events had influenced the general current of his thoughts; what struggles he had been engaged in, and their issue. (a) There has been a day for sinning, there ought to be a day for punishing. Many of these people have been church members most of their lives. INFLUENCE. We are laying up treasures, but the treasure is wrath. Does not this show his courage! (d) Then the books shall be opened, and everything recorded there read. What a difference there will be then between the Babe of Bethlehem's manger and the King of kings and Lord of lords; between the weary man and full of woes, and He that shall then be girt with glory, sitting on a throne encircled with a rainbow! 6. Called by God, indeed, but for work rather than privilege. By the power of the Lord who forgives us and restores us and makes us his own, we have heaven instead of hell. He will not allow us to deceive ourselves, to be tricked and trapped by falling into self-deceit. There is a large part of his nature which is made to fit into the society of his fellows; and if this part of him does not find its proper complement, the nature of the man is not all called out. Surely it can't be that you think you are going to escape! Thus in another sin, "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer" (1 John 3:15). If it is not that you think you'll escape his judgment, then it must be that you are treating with disdain the opportunities God gives you to repent. I am going to use myself as an example, simply because I feel I am such an excellent example of what the rest of you are like. You will find him as your Redeemer and Lord and Savior. Take it easy!" (Romans 2:5-11 NIV) I am amazed to see in my own heart how many times I expect God to show favoritism. I would much rather say that every time you make a choice, you are turning the central part of you, the part that chooses, into something a little different than what it was before. In Verses 5-11, the apostle presents the last step of his argument, and describes what lies ahead for those who refuse to face the actual condition of their lives: But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and. 2. There is a way of escape: Admit your sins freely, and receive the forgiveness of God -- on the basis of the work of Jesus Christ in his death on the cross and his resurrection life available to us.
